Eating ABQ: Albuquerque’s Best Lattes

November 14, 2014 by Kristin Satterlee

Zendo’s Zia Latte

I was a latecomer to coffee. Throughout college and grad school, I didn’t drink it at all. But I kept taking sips of Arne’s, and eventually decided those mochas were pretty darn good. (This keep-trying-it method has not reaped similar dividends with beer.)

Arne started making me cafe au lait and lattes at home, and before too long, I was hooked. We drank homemade iced lattes almost every morning this summer, and now I am truly lost.

Writing tends to end up with me drinking even more lattes, because at coffee shops there are no cats sitting on my keyboard and no laundry to do, so they are tempting places to work.

Mike’s Mocha at Michael Thomas

There are lots of reasons to choose one coffee shop over another for work (or any other) purposes… quality of wi-fi, ambience, crowdedness… but perhaps the most important question is: Who has the best latte? These are my top three choices, but I’m hoping you’ll add some contestants of your own in the comments!

In alphabetical order….

The Grove’s Vanilla Latte: Flavored with housemade vanilla syrup, this latte comes filled to the brim, sometimes enough that it slops over and musses the pretty latte art. Not too sweet, with rich foam and that perfect balance that forces you to close your eyes and say “Mmmm.”

The Grove’s Vanilla Latte
Michael Thomas’s Mike’s Mocha: An improbable-sounding combination of coffee, chocolate, blackberry, and condensed milk combines into an incredibly rich, smooth, soothing drink that is complex but instantly lovable. Sweeter than the other two entries. If I had to drink any latte every day, it would be this one.
Zendo’s Zia Latte: A close relative of the ubiquitous Mexican mocha, the Zia latte combines dark or white chocolate (I’ve not tried it with white) and cinnamon with two shots of Zendo’s beautifully balanced espresso and milk. This is the most beautiful entry, served in an oversize cup with luxurious foam supporting the best latte art I’ve seen in Albuquerque. For extra kick, order the Aztec latte, which adds just enough chile powder: you may barely notice it at first, but by the end of the cup your mouth will be pleasantly aglow.
There are a couple of new coffee shops I’ve been meaning to try: Duggan’s on Lead and Humble Coffee on Lomas. If either one of them fields a contender, I’ll let you know!
