Kitsune and Taproom at Old Town

October 5, 2021 by Kristin Satterlee Leave a Comment

…we ordered three items from the “Shareables” section of the menu: Bo Ssam Fries, KFC (Korean Fried Chicken), and Ribs with Furikake. I really wanted the Spam Musubi, but I was sure we didn’t need any more food. (Turns out I was right about that.)

Finally, almost a year after I spotted their banner at the old Disco Display House on Central, Little Bear Coffee is open for business!

Uptown Tea – Sleek New Digs for NM Tea Co

December 5, 2019 by Kristin Satterlee Leave a Comment

Front counter at Uptown Tea

The metal canisters still gleam in ranks on their shelves, each with a small sample tin in front for sniffing. The shop feels open and airy, with a bright pop of color from variously sized paper lanterns.

Scrumptious from Scratch at Duke City Kitchen

November 11, 2019 by Kristin Satterlee Leave a Comment

It doesn’t look all that promising from outside. On the east side of the parking lot for the strip mall housing Clark’s pet store, hidden from Lomas Blvd by an auto shop and across a side street from Sprouts, there is a small stand-alone building: Some may remember it as the former home of the…

Amaranth Porridge: Not a Success

April 24, 2018 by Kristin Satterlee Leave a Comment

We tried amaranth porridge for breakfast yesterday. It didn’t go well. We embarked on this path a few days ago, when Arne sent me this article by Mark Bittman, a long-time champion of sensible eating, and David Katz, founding director of Yale’s Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center. It didn’t contain much information we didn’t already know,…

Lay’s “Do Us a Flavor” 2017: Kettle-Cooked Everything Bagel with Cream Cheese

September 12, 2017 by Kristin Satterlee 2 Comments

After a very pleasing experience with Wavy Fried Green Tomato – the first flavor in Lay’s 2017 “Do Us a Flavor” lineup – I was excited to try Kettle-Cooked Everything Bagel with Cream Cheese. I waited a few days to open the bag though, because Arne and I inhaled the whole bag of Fried Green…

Lay’s “Do Us a Flavor” 2017: Wavy Fried Green Tomato

August 27, 2017 by Kristin Satterlee Leave a Comment

Frito-Lay is at it again. They know people – well, people like me, anyway – can’t resist a limited edition. Or something weird and unique. Or, let’s face it, a chance to pass judgment. So, for the fifth year running, they bring us the “Do Us a Flavor” contest: three or four limited-edition flavors made…

Eating ABQ: Taqueria El Cotorro

September 8, 2016 by Kristin Satterlee 5 Comments

I was driving north on Carlisle when a glorious apparitionappeared to me: a neon sign blazing the simple words CRAFT TACOS into the night. You’ll be happy to hear that I retained control of the car.

Eating Abroad: Oslo’s Arakataka

August 12, 2016 by Kristin Satterlee 2 Comments

Our first full day in Norway was surprisingly warm. All the packing lists insisted that travelers bring jackets, scarves, and hats – one with the notation YES, EVEN IN SUMMER – but we quickly shed jackets and sweaters, and I even wished for shorts as we explored the open-air Folkemuseum and the Viking Ship Museum.

Eating CU: MIGA Modern Cuisine

June 23, 2016 by Kristin Satterlee Leave a Comment

We went home to Illinois last month to visit Arne’s parents. When we were planning the trip, they surprised and delighted me by suggesting that we go out to a new restaurant, which Arne described to me as “fancy Korean-French.” The name did not get passed along, so I was in suspense as to what…
